There is a deep spiritual and physical connection between the Sculptured Fused Glass Wall of the North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, Illinois … and the Magdalanian Caves of Lascaux in Montignac, France … dating from about 17000 years ago. As humans we are united by themes of history and customs … bound together by the commonality of the natural world … rivers, oceans, the environments of forests, fields, mountains and the stars. It is known that men and women in pre-historic times and even up through early Minoan civilizations lived together in peace and harmony with Nature. They built … and planted … and cultivated their lives … celebrating as well as worshipping the natural cyclical rhythms of Nature and the nurturing powers of the Universe. Their shelters … their Built Environments … as ours are only expressions of their beliefs, history and technology. Engravings and paintings throughout history convey an astonishing and most powerful reminder of how inter-dependent and inter-connected we humans are with one another, with living creatures, and our mother Earth. We all share the responsibility and accountability to preserve and protect that which is precious and priceless about our human existence upon our planet and in the Universe. From ancients shall we learn; not new ways, but ways all too commonly forgotten. They more often cast their eyes upward to a worshipped sun, and learned that the lights of the sky could, in many ways, enhance their lives. They felt, perhaps, a greater kinship with their surroundings. And so they built.
